ABSTRACT
This study investigated the possibility of genetic inheritance of 229 stuttering males and females. Subject s, aged 2 to 45, were divided into three age groups: the preschool- age group, the school- age group, and adult s. The data collected were analyzed in terms of sex, presence or absence of language difficulties, stuttering- onset ages, and presence or absence of family history of stuttering. Fifty- five percent of subject s reported family history of stuttering. Females who stuttered were found more likely than males stutterers to have stuttering relatives. Among the preschool- age and school- age groups, subjects without language difficulties were no more likely than adult subjects to have family history of stuttering. Adult subject s without language difficulties, however, were more likely to have family history of stuttering. Stuttering- onset ages were earlier for subject s with family history of stuttering than for subject s without it. Differences between sexes were found depending on whether the family history of stuttering was on the paternal side or on the maternal side.
