ABSTRACT
The purpose of the present study was to identify the functional working memory deficits of children with SLI and to investigate the potential relation between these children’s functional working memory deficits and their incapabilities in lexical word acquisition. Forty-five children participated in two kinds of tasks for this study. Each child belonged to one of the three groups: (1) 15 children with SLI whose language age were 5;0-6;6, (2) 15 normally developing children matched in language age(LA), and (3) 15 normally developing children matched in chronological age(CA). In the functional working memory(FWM) task, the children were asked to recall as many words as they could. The children heard the words under the three different processing conditions-no load, single load, and dual load condition-in which the amount of processing load was changed systematically during word recalling. In the quick incidental word learning(QUIL) task, the children were asked to learn novel words in the presentation of two picture cards, and then were asked to create the sentences representing the contents of a new picture card with novel words that they had just learned. The number of words recalled and the number of novel words learned were analyzed. The results of these two tasks revealed that the children with SLI had poorer FWM and QUIL capabilities compared to either LA or CA control group. The results of the present study seem to confirm the potential influences of limited FWM capabilities on delayed lexical development of children with SLI.
