The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of reading of high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorders. Eight children with autism spectrum disorders in school years and eight language- and age-matched normal children participated in this study. Words decoding, sentence comprehension, and text comprehension tasks were used and frequencies of correct responses in the three tasks were measured with the following study results being obtained. First, high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorders performed significantly better than normal children in the words decoding task, significantly worse in the tow comprehension task, especially the text comphrension task. Secondly, a significant interaction effect between the two children groups and the reading tasks(the recognition task and the comprehension task) was observed.
