Intervention for the Children with Art iculation Disorders of Heavily Aspirated Plosive Consonants

ABSTRACT
Kor ean has three types of plosiv es : slightly aspir at ed (/ p/ , / t/ , / k/ ), unaspir at ed (/ p / , / t / , / k / ), an d h eav ily a spir at ed (/ ph/ , / t h / , / kh / ). P los iv e con son ant s ar e am on g the fir st of th e speech soun ds acquir ed earlier in art iculation dev elopment ; n ev ertheles s , childr en with th e art iculation error s in plosiv e con son ant s ar e n ot unu su al. Normally dev elopin g childr en u sually undergo a st ag e when they sub - stitut e un aspir at ed plosiv es for heav ily a spir ated ones and th e same sub st itution patt ern appear s in childr en with articulat ion disorder s . Furth ermor e, it is not uncommon t o fin d in childr en the co- occurrence of mis articulat ion s of heavily aspirated plosisv es an d th e delet ion of th e glot t al fricativ e, / h/ . T h e delet ion of / h/ seems to un derlie the sub stitut ion due t o the common propert ies of / h/ and h eav ily a spir at ed plosiv es . T h e su bj ect s of t h e pr es ent r es ear ch w er e fou r ch ildr en ag ed 4;0, 4;1, 5;5, an d 7;0 who sh owed both the sub st itution and the deletion of / h/ . It was found that th e childr en were able to produce the heavily aspirated plosiv es upon complet ion of the tr eatment of their / h/ - delet ion , with n o sub s equent int erv ent ion of the plosiv es . It is , thu s , r ecommended that speech - language pathologist s should a s ses s the produ ct ion s of / h/ sound prior to the t r eatment of th e heav ily a spir ated plosives.
