ABSTRACT |
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of word(noun and verb) productions of children with SLI. Sixty children participated in this study: (1) 20 children with specific language impairment(SLI group) whose language age were 4;6-6;6, (2) 20 normal children chronological-age matched with the SLI children(CA controls), and (3) 20 normal children matched on a composite index of language age with the SLI children(LA controls). Picture naming and word recognition tests were used, and frequencies and types of errors were analysed. Significant differences were found as follows: (1) the SLI group demonstrated significantly higher frequency of errors in verb production than that of nouns, but LA controls produced more errors in nouns than those of verbs, (2) the SLI group produced unrelated errors more than others compared with normal controls. But there were no differences in error types produced in both noun and verb tests, (3) the SLI group demonstrated higher frequency of misnaming, but recognized items in noun and verb productions, but there were no significant differences between the SLI group and each of the two normal control groups. These results are consistent with the findings of earlier studies with regard to the restricted verb productions of the children with SLI. |
